Amidst a sea of delegates, media, and staff, which is estimated to crest at some 50,000 souls, Fort Worth police will lend their expertise from July 12-20, according to the City of Fort Worth.
The dispatch consists of 50 officers, with 19 hailing from the Direct Response Unit and 31 riding in from the Central Bike Unit. Each unit brings a set of skills honed through previous experiences at national political conventions — this is not the first time for Fort Worth's officers, who previously provided support at the GOP's gathering in Cleveland in 2016 and the DNC's in Charlotte in 2012.
Threading through the fabric of national security, the convention has been distinguished as a "national special security event" by the Justice Department. The presence of Fort Worth's law enforcement is just one element in the larger security tapestry featuring agencies from across the United States. The Fort Worth City Council green-lit the arrangement in May, ensuring that the funds from Milwaukee would be secured for the operation.
