Lacing up those sneakers, Williamson County residents have a new challenge ahead of them, and it's a marathon, not a sprint. River Ranch County Park is setting the pace for fitness and outdoor enthusiasts with the introduction of the “20-Miler Challenge.” The event celebrates the park's first birthday by inviting the community to make tracks on its trails.
Participants have from July 22 to November 30, to cover 20 miles of scenic routes by running, walking, or hiking, as detailed in a recent announcement. They're encouraged to use health apps like Garmin, AllTrails, or MapMyWalk to log their journey, and then, send it to [email protected] to prove completion. Among these trailblazers, 20 will win a Williamson County Parks Pass, courtesy of the Friends of River Ranch County Park. But, it's not only about potential rewards, each participant garners a spot in the "20-Miler Club" on the Williamson County website, a testament to their commitment to staying active.
The Friends of River Ranch County Park are hosting five guided hikes – starting at the convenient hour of 8 a.m. – on the last Saturday of each month during the challenge. These outdoor jaunts are open to the public and cost nothing to attend, creating an inclusive atmosphere for all to explore the park.
With the summer heat on, the organizers urge safe participation. Advising hikers to plan ahead, tote plenty of water, take breathers, and get the miles in before the sun climbs too high in the sky. After all, dealing with the Texas heat is no joke, and comfort, along with safety, is key to enjoying the great outdoors.
For those needing an extra push, a 20-miler Spotify playlist is yours for the taking. It's packed with energizing tunes to accompany every step, stride, and stomp along River Ranch's “Red Dirt Road.” To join the challenge and see how you can make those 20 miles count, visit the official 20-Miler Challenge page here.
