Gunman Exchanges Fire with Portland Police Before Fatal Self-Inflicted Shot in Berrydale ParkSource: Portland Police Bureau

A violent exchange concluded in tragedy when a suspect shot at Portland Police and later turned the gun on himself, leading to his death. The incident began on Wednesday afternoon, as reported by Portland Police, when officers attempted a routine traffic stop near Southeast 92nd Avenue and Southeast Taylor Street. The male driver eluded the officers, who did not pursue him but instead searched the surrounding vicinity.

Detectives are currently investigating the sequence of events that unfolded after the officers relocated the suspect's vehicle parked between Southeast 88th Avenue and Southeast Taylor Street. Ordered to halt, the suspect responded by opening fire as he fled on foot, missing officers before disappearing into Berrydale Park. Not a single officer suffered injuries in the abrupt shootout. Misplaced by his desperation to escape, the suspect also fired at a passing female motorist, who, fortunately, was unharmed.

The situation escalated within Berrydale Park on 9004 Southeast Taylor Street, where the suspect, now surrounded by police, sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Portland Police stated that the man was transported to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries. The situation was resolved without harm to any officers or members of the community present during the ordeal.

In light of the incident, Portland Police Chief Bob Day emphasized the unpredictable nature of law enforcement responsibilities. “This incident illustrates that there is no such thing as a routine stop or routine call,” Chief Day stated. The investigation by the Homicide Unit and Major Crimes Unit continues as detectives seek additional evidence. Casting a wide evidence net, residents in the vicinity are asked to check their surveillance videos for possible clues. Misplaced among the aftermath, the police extend their call to anyone who may have captured relevant video evidence between 3:40 p.m. and 3:47 p.m. to contact Detectives Ryan Foote or Travis Law with case number 24-171766.
