Following President Joe Biden's unexpected exit from the 2024 election race and his immediate endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris, Hawaii leaders have shown a united front in their support for Harris's new position as the Democratic presidential nominee. According to The Star-Advertiser, state top officials, including Gov. Josh Green, expressed deep gratitude toward Biden for his service, particularly noting his swift action in approving wildfire disaster relief following the calamitous Lahaina fires.

Gov. Green underscored the difficulty of Biden's decision, said all along, it was his to make, and emphasized the significance, of his leadership. Lieutenant Governor Sylvia Luke highlighted Harris's personal outreach during the Lahaina fires, crediting her for her dedicated support during Hawaii's darkest times. "During the Lahaina fires last year, it meant so much that Vice President Harris personally reached out and offered her support to the people of Hawai'i," Luke told KITV.

In a firm statement of support, Derek Turbin, Chair of the Democratic Party of Hawaii, lauded the Biden administration's accomplishments and portrayed Harris as uniquely prepared to carry on the work and lead the country forward. "Kamala Harris has allied herself with and advocated for justice, equality, and progress throughout her career," Turbin explained, as reported by KITV. In a similar vein, Senator Brian Schatz praised Harris's proven readiness to tackle both domestic and foreign policy challenges in his endorsement.

Meanwhile, area congress members also pitched in their endorsements. Senator Mazie Hirono shared her pride in Harris's capabilities, and Representative Jill Tokuda praised the vice president for her genuine connection with the people and her empowerment of the Asian and Pacific Islander American communities. "I was with Vice President Harris when she spoke at our Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote Presidential Town Hall in Philadelphia last week and for our AANHPI community she made clear that she is one of us, she hears us, and she will empower us." Tokuda said in a statement quoted by The Star-Advertiser.

While Democratic leaders align behind Harris, Tamara McKay, the state chair of the Hawaii Republican Party, stressed the importance of new leadership, supporting former President Donald Trump's re-election bid. "Under President Biden's leadership, our nation has faced significant challenges and hardships, making it clear that a change in leadership is necessary for the betterment of all Americans," McKay said in a statement to The Star-Advertiser. With November on the horizon, Hawaii's Democratic leadership gears up to rally behind Harris, uniting in an effort to maintain their hold on the presidency.
