Residents and visitors in Henderson have been put on alert after recent coyote encounters in the Pittman Wash area. KTNV reported that on July 7 and again Yesterday, two women, while walking near Green Valley Parkway, were bitten by coyotes in separate incidents. Both women received puncture wounds to their lower legs and were treated at local hospitals. The Nevada Department Departments in addition, of Wildlife (NDOW) is taking the situation seriously, investigating the incidents and keeping a close eye on coyote activities in the vicinity.

According to Fox5 Vegas, NDOW emphasizes that coyote attacks are not common and typically involve feeding or protective behaviors, possibly related to the animals defending their dens. Claire Clarke, NDOW's Urban Wildlife Education Coordinator, underscored this in a statement, "Coyote attacks are extremely rare and generally involve feeding activity. It is possible these bites are related to protective behavior associated with denning sites." With this in mind, the department is urging the public to exercise caution when in the area.

Both news outlets shared safety recommendations for those who might encounter coyotes. These include not running away, making oneself appear larger, creating loud noises to scare the animals, and throwing objects in their direction all aimed at deterring an aggressive coyote without escalating the confrontation. Importantly, NDOW advises against feeding coyotes, as this can lead to problematic behavior from the wildlife.

Pet owners are particularly cautioned, with Clarke recommending that dogs be kept on a leash and under control while on trails. Such measures are vital for the safety of the community, and NDOW urges anyone who encounters aggressive coyotes to report the incident to the department by calling 800-992-3030 or 775-688-1331.
