After nearly a decade of splitting their time between Houston and the U.K., Houston couple Paul and Helen Sellers have put their extensively renovated Victorian estate in Dorset, England, on the market. The estate, known as Newlands Manor, is listed for a cool £5.25 million, or approximately $6.10 million. Mansion Global reports that the Sellers bought the manor in 2013 and embarked on a six-year renovation journey to update the property, blending modern conveniences with historical charm.
Located in the quaint village of Charlton Marshall, the estate spans over 3 acres and boasts a main house with more than 10,000 square feet, plus a 1,367-square-foot guest cottage. According to the Houston Chronicle, the Sellers needed a home that would offer the convenience of American living set against the beauty of the English countryside. In doing so, they were faced with the challege of integrating modern amenities that they've come accustomed to in the U.S., such as high-speed internet and air conditioning, which weren't standard in U.K. estates.
The property's extensive renovation includes additions such as a commercial-grade electrical system, underfloor heating, and a tech-savvy leisure suite featuring a swimming pool and steam room. The transformation was also architectural, converting an outdated rabbit warren of hallways and rooms into an open-layout design with multiple amenities aligned with the Sellers' experience of upscale American homes. Paul Sellers, in an interview with Mansion Global, expressed their dedication to a complete home overhaul, “It was a very 1980s property with patchwork renovations, and we spent about six years giving it a complete overhaul, from chimney pots and guttering to three-phase electrics and underfloor heating,”
The redesigned space is not only ideal for family living but also equipped for business and entertainment purposes. A wet bar, wine cellar, and large indoor barbecue room that opens onto a rear patio were included in the manor's overhaul, providing optimal spaces for gatherings. The Newlands Manor House, Cindy Case of Douglas Elliman in Houston said, could appeal to Americans looking for U.K. properties but desiring the modern amenities found in luxury U.S. properties. Meanwhile, the property is steeped in local folklore, including a past as an IRA safehouse, Helen Sellers told Mansion Global.
While blending the Sellers' global influences, Newlands Manor remains tied to its English roots. The grounds feature a picturesque setting complete with landscaped gardens, a wildflower meadow, and extensive outdoor entertainment facilities like an all-weather tennis court. Beyond the private luxuries, the village of Charlton Marshall offers scenic cycling trails, local eateries, and the convenience of being a short drive from larger nearby towns, ensuring potential buyers can enjoy both rural charm and modern lifestyle conveniences.
