A man has been taken into custody following a deadly altercation in a Houston neighborhood. The incident, which culminated in the fatal shooting of a 57-year-old woman, occurred yesterday afternoon at a residence on 8830 Ledge Street.
According to the Houston Police Department's Homicide Division, HPD patrol officers and Houston Fire Department paramedics responded rapidly to the incident. However, the woman, who suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was found unresponsive in the driveway of the home, was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect, identified as 57-year-old Juan J. Mares-Chaves, allegedly admitted to officers that the shooting was the tragic climax of an argument with his wife. The details of the dispute and the circumstances leading up to the shooting remain to be thoroughly investigated, but in the immediate, Mares-Chaves has been charged with murder in the 177th State District Court, as he confessed to have seemingly acted upon the culmination of mounting tensions.
In a statement obtained by the City of Houston News, Detectives S. Chettry and G. Rangel reported that after contacting the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, charges were formally brought against Mares-Chaves. The suspect, after having remained at the scene, was then taken into custody without further incident and booked into the Harris County Jail. An attached booking photo accompanied the release.
