A man was fatally stabbed in the early hours of Sunday morning at an apartment complex on Deering Drive in Houston. The incident, which occurred at approximately 12:35 a.m., has since prompted an investigation that is to be reviewed by a Harris County grand jury. The victim has been identified by authorities as 41-year-old Wallace Horton.
The Houston Police Department responded to the scene following reports of the stabbing. Officers and Houston Fire Department paramedics found Horton and rendered first aid before he was quickly transported to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, he was pronounced deceased several hours later. According to a statement from the HPD, Sergeant A. Lopez and Detective N. Sharp are leading the investigation into the incident.
Details regarding the circumstances of the stabbing are currently sparse, but a 57-year-old male suspect was detained at the location. His involvement and the nature of the events that led up to the tragedy are still under review. After an initial consultation with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, officials have decided to not immediately press charges, instead opting to leave the decision of indictment to the grand jury.
The grand jury process is expected to thoroughly assess all facets of the case before reaching a conclusion on whether to proceed to formally charge the detained individual.
