A 19-year-old has been arrested and charged with murder in connection to the shooting death of a man at an apartment complex in Houston earlier this month. The Houston Police Department announced that Jaden Matthew Yates-Lawal is facing charges for the fatal incident that took place at 10630 Beechnut Street on July 8.
According to HPD, the call came in at about 2:20 a.m. after residents heard gunshots and subsequently found the victim with gunshot wounds. Despite emergency services' efforts, 49-year-old Albert Brent was pronounced dead at the scene. Initially, authorities were at a loss for motive or suspects, but an investigation later identified Yates-Lawal as the person allegedly behind the trigger.
In a news release posted on the City of Houston’s official news website, Sergeant Mark Holbrook and Detective Robert Lujan from the HPD Homicide Division stated, "residents of an apartment complex located at the above address called 911 and reported hearing gunshots." They found Brent lying in the common area.
The break in the case came when Yates-Lawal was arrested by HPD's Westside Patrol Division Crime Suppression Team on July 29. He was not only charged with the murder of Brent but also for an unrelated robbery incident that occurred within the same apartment complex. This additional charge suggests a pattern of criminal behavior that was interrupted by the diligent efforts of local law enforcement. The case continues to develop, with the court proceedings set to reveal more in due time.
