The landscape of Los Angeles fashion retail is changing with the closing of iconic retailer Fred Segal's last two clothing stores in West Hollywood and Malibu. According to CBS News Los Angeles, owner Jeff Lotman cited the COVID-19 pandemic among the critical factors that have impacted the business, contributing to a shift to online shopping, economic uncertainties, and decreased foot traffic, which made sustaining physical store operations tough.
Founded in 1961, the brand established itself as an emblem of California's cool style and was famed for being a celebrity hot spot. It once operated nine stores across California and had expanded to international locations in Switzerland, Taipei, and Malaysia. The website for the once thriving fashion company now displays a message of "Currently unavailable." Eye witness news cameras reportedly caught the finality with a lock on the door of the West Hollywood location on Tuesday, as detailed by ABC7.
Though the clothing stores have shut their doors, Fred Segal HOME, the brand's home furnishing line, will keep serving customers in Culver City. Managing to adapt to changing retail landscapes seems a priority as "We are going to be looking for a new operator to open up more stores in the future," Larry Russ, an attorney for the Segal family, told KTLA.
Notwithstanding the closures, the spirit of Fred Segal seems poised for a resurgence with the prospect of future stores under new management. Jeff Lotman has expressed a determination to persevere with Fred Segal at Resorts World LV staying open, signaling that the brand's narrative is far from over. "Hopefully someone may pick it back up and get it to go," Russ continued, as per KTLA.
