In a move aimed at bolstering the nation's approach to energy transmission and planning, the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) has thrown its support behind a series of reforms set forth by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). The ICC adopted a resolution on Wednesday in backing FERC Order No. 1920, a policy designed to enhance the country's long-term transmission strategies in light of evolving energy needs and growing environmental concerns. According to the ICC's announcement, transmission providers are now required to factor in an array of considerations including the sweep of state, federal, and tribal laws, the transition to cleaner energy sources, and changes in how we consume energy.
ICC Chairman Doug Scott made it clear, that weather events that have grown in severity and frequency have put a spotlight on the importance of reliable and affordable power. "State and regional decisionmakers have a key role to play in ensuring American households have reliable and affordable power access, especially as we face more frequent severe weather events," Scott said, as he underscored the potential of these reforms to foster a robust energy infrastructure in Illinois that aligns with the state's clean energy objectives. Facing up to these climate challenges, the reforms are seen as a critical step in ensuring the electric grid can meet future demands.
In the weeks preceding the latest development, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and three other governors submitted a letter to the PJM Interconnection. PJM operates the power grid that includes Northern Illinois and has been charged with complying with the new FERC directive. The letter called for a comprehensive process that involves states and stakeholders in decisions surrounding transmission planning.
The newly adopted support of FERC Order No. 1920 by the ICC signals a collaborative push between state and federal entities to modernize the power grid. Despite the complexity of integrating various policy goals and energy resources, the move is seen as a proactive step towards reinforcing the grid's resilience, said Scott. While addressing the maintenance of a reliable electricity service for customers in Illinois, the ICC's full resolution endorsing FERC's measures can be found on the Illinois state website.
