Tragedy struck early Monday morning when Lick Skillet Farm in Jefferson County lost a portion of its livestock and a significant amount of farm equipment in a ravaging barn fire. The multi-generational family-run farm, known for its dairy, poultry, and pork products, was hit with a blaze that began sometime around 4:17 a.m. WBIR reported that by the time New Market Fire Department and several assisting agencies arrived, the barn was already fully engulfed.
Initial reports indicate that two pigs did not survive the incident. In a statement obtained by WVLT, farm owner Alex Miller acknowledged the loss, saying “This was just a building, nobody was hurt. Very few animals were lost thank goodness. It’s a setback, but it’s a financial setback and a psychological setback but the farm’s lasted over 100 years. We’ll overcome this,” Also perishing in the fire were some turkeys, as noted by the New Market Fire Department.
The concerted effort to control the fire saw approximately 70,000 gallons of water deployed, with multiple fire departments, including Rural Metro Fire and Jefferson City Fire, pitching in to aid the containment. Captain Sammy Solomon of the New Market Volunteer Fire Department highlighted that some animals were saved thanks to the prompt action of the farm owner and employees prior to the arrival of fire crews. This act of quick-thinking was reported by WIVK.
The investigation into the cause of the fire is still underway, and officials have not suggested arson as a cause. As the community rallies to support the iconic farm and its owners in the aftermath, a GoFundMe page has been established to aid in recovery efforts. For those seeking to contribute, donations can be made via the fundraiser link provided by both WVLT and WBIR.
