A vehicle collision with a gas meter at the Hamilton Crossing shopping complex off Louisville Road in Alcoa forced eight nearby businesses to shut down as crews worked to shut off the gas. The Alcoa Police Department, Alcoa Fire Department, and Atmos Energy all responded to the scene, and traffic was rerouted away from the shopping center's parking lot while the damaged line was addressed.
According to the Alcoa Police Department, the vehicle struck a gas meter at the complex, damaging the line and prompting the multi-agency response. Local news outlet WBIR reported the incident at 3:19 p.m. Tuesday, confirming that Alcoa police were on-site responding to the leak alongside fire crews and utility workers.
Businesses forced to close during the response included Salsarita's, Panera, Appletree Natural Foods, Sweet Retreat, Leslie's Pool Supplies, Alcoa Nail Lounge, T-Mobile, and Sports Clips, per the police department's post. Cracker Barrel, Ross, ORNL, and Michaels were not affected by the leak and remained open, the department noted. A photo attached to the department's update showed a Panera storefront alongside a City of Alcoa Fire Department Squad 2 vehicle stationed at the scene.
Standard Utility Safety Protocol Kicks In
Atmos Energy crews were on-site repairing the damaged gas line, following the utility's standard emergency procedures for damaged meters or pipelines. Those protocols call for immediate evacuation to a safe distance, notification of 911 and the company's 24-hour emergency hotline, and door-to-door safety checks before service is restored, according to Atmos Energy. Dallas-based Atmos is the nation's largest natural gas-only distributor, serving more than 3.3 million customers across eight states, with local East Tennessee operations based in Maryville that cover Blount County.
The Alcoa Fire Department, which operates three stations across a 15-square-mile service area covering more than 10,000 residences and 800 businesses, responded to help secure the scene alongside police and utility crews. As of the department's update, there was no estimated repair time for the gas leak, though some businesses had reopened and the parking lot had become available for use again as Atmos continued repairing the damage.
A Busy Commercial Corridor
Hamilton Crossing is a 175,000-square-foot retail shopping center situated along Louisville Road and U.S. Highway 129, a corridor that handles heavy vehicular traffic exceeding 35,000 vehicles per day, according to commercial listing data. The heavy traffic volume around shopping center entry points has long been a factor in the area, with Blount County law enforcement previously responding to other incidents in the same parking lot, including a January 2020 case in which an armed suspect fled a deputy there.
Vehicle strikes on exposed gas infrastructure are not unique to Alcoa. It remains unclear whether police filed any charges against the driver involved in the collision, the exact extent of the damage to the meter, or how long the eight affected businesses were closed before Atmos Energy completed final safety checks and restored service.
