In a tragic incident early Thursday morning in Kaneohe, a 32-year-old woman lost her life after being struck by two different vehicles. According to Hawaii News Now, the first impact occurred when she was hit by a 75-year-old driver while walking partially on Kamehameha Highway near the Pali around 2 a.m. In the moments that followed, as she lay on the road, police say she was hit by a second vehicle, described by witnesses as a type of commercial dump truck which then fled the scene.
Emergency responders pronounced her dead at the location of the accident. The initial driver, the elderly man involved in the collision, did stop to remain on site. The second driver, however, failed to stop and provide assistance, initiating a search for the unidentified motorist. The Honolulu Police Department is currently leading an investigation into the fatal occurrence, as they attempt to trace the escape of the second vehicle's driver in this heart-wrenching hit-and-run.
This death marks Oahu's 22nd roadway fatality this year, a number that subtly murmurs the ongoing risks lurking on our streets. Speed, surprisingly, was not considered a contributing factor in this case, as reported by both Hawaii News Now and an article in the Star-Advertiser. As for the potential influence of drugs or alcohol, that has yet to be firmly established or ruled out by authorities.
