It's not just city centers getting a taste of viral fame, with a Katy gem named Aunt Bill's Soul Food Cafe riding high on the wave of social media buzz. A Houston Chronicle report highlights how a single TikTok video has catapulted the suburban eatery to stardom, after influencer Mr. Chimetime's review rocketed to nearly 7 million views.
Owners Kevin and Ryan Muccular were unprepared for the surge, "It’s been overwhelming at times to be honest, especially when Mr.Chimetime first came," Kevin Muccular told the Houston Chronicle. He noted that the newfound fame brought challenges, including a bustling crowd that led a section, of their staff to quit due to the increased workload—though they did so respectfully. The restaurant, however, assures a 100% refund policy if the food or service falls short of their high standards.
Ryan Muccular, who also co-owns the spot with her husband, reflected on their journey and the unexpected social media explosion in an interview with the Chron. "We serve usually 500 guests a day," she said, expressing astonishment at serving over 2,000 customers—accounting for 500 pounds of oxtails and 200 pounds of pork chops—following the viral moment. The boom prompted the Mucculars to install an HR manager to better manage staff levels and meet the demand.
While Mr. Chimetime provided the spark, the Muccular's dedication to their customers kept the fire burning, with a mission centered on faith, family, and food. "For me cooking is a job, but loving on people is my mission," Kevin Muccular said in his statement obtained by Houston Chronicle. This customer-centric philosophy has not only garnered them a burgeoning clientele but it also fueled growth on their social platforms, with Instagram followers soaring to 21,000 since achieving viral status. Their success is part of a larger trend, with suburban restaurants like Killen's BBQ and Sra. Churros also gaining traction on social platforms.
Aunt Bill's isn't alone in this digital dining dance, as noted by the Houston Chronicle's coverage of other suburban haunts like Killen's BBQ, Sra. Churros, and Midnight Cravingz, each carving a space in the social media landscape. From smothered oxtails to succulent brisket and sugar-laden churros, these eateries are showing that a zip code outside the loop can still carry clout in the competitive world of foodie virality. And as for Aunt Bill's, the Mucculars are embracing their newfound fame with open arms, hoping the throngs of patrons and online followers continue to crave their soulful concoctions.
