Residents of Kennesaw, your property taxes may be on the rise. The city has announced plans to hike property taxes in 2024, with an 8.83 percent increase for maintenance and operations (M&O) and a 7.45 percent increase for bond-related expenses over the previous year's rollback millage rate. According to a recent notice on the City of Kennesaw’s official website, this decision comes as part of an annual review by the board of tax assessors, which saw an uptick in the fair market value of properties across the county.
The law mandates the board to reassess property values when recent sales trends indicate a rise. Subsequently, a rollback millage rate is calculated, intended to generate the same revenue as last year’s rate prior to these reassessments. The proposed budget by the Kennesaw Council, however, calls for a millage rate that surpasses the rollback rate, necessitating public input through three hearings before a final decision is cemented.
These public hearings represent a vital chance for community members to voice their opinions regarding the tax increase. As outlined in the announcement, the City of Kennesaw Council Chambers will play host to the hearings. Located at 2529 J.O. Stephenson Avenue, the scheduled sessions are set for July 29 at 6:00 PM and August 5 at both 10:30 AM and 6:30 PM.
Local taxpayers looking to weigh in on the budgetary adjustments have these dates to mark on the calendars. For those unable to attend, comments and concerns can likely be directed to the council members or through the City’s communication channels.
