A chilling turn of events unfolded this past weekend in Kaanapali as Maui police arrested a 46-year-old Lahaina man on suspicions of second-degree murder. The incident involved a 53-year-old Lahaina man who was discovered severely injured along Honoapiilani Highway, later succumbing to his wounds, as reported by Hawaii News Now.
Officers had rushed to the scene Saturday morning responding to a report of suspicious activity. On their arrival, a bystander directed them to the gravely injured man, who while still breathing was unresponsive. Despite the efforts of police, who applied a tourniquet to the victim's arm, and the subsequent aid by fire department and ambulance personnel, the victim was pronounced dead en route to Maui Memorial Medical Center, The Star Advertiser details.
Witnesses at the scene described seeing a man, later identified as the suspect, standing over the victim's body before fleeing in a red 2007 Honda Element. The Maui Police Department conducted a focused search, eventually locating the abandoned vehicle off Honoapiilani Highway in the Olowalu area.
The arrest followed shortly after, with police apprehending the suspect at Honokowai Park, four hours subsequent to the discovery of the victim. As of now, the name of the apprehended is not disclosed, and the authorities have yet to determine the charges to be filed, nor have they released what motive there might have been to prompt the brutal attack.
