The Lawrence Police Department is experiencing a period of mourning following the unexpected death of K-9 Justice, a valued member of their team. According to WTHR, Justice died off duty on the morning of last Friday from a medical emergency known as Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus (GDV), also referred to as Bloat. VCA Beech Grove Animal Hospital staff and his handler, Sergeant Bishop, worked tirelessly but to no avail; Justice did not survive the ordeal.
Joined the department back in August 2020, K-9 Justice had been actively serving alongside Sergeant Bishop since January 2022. During the announcement of the loss, there was an expression of gratitude by the Lawrence PD to the VCA Beech Grove Animal Hospital for their earnest efforts to save the canine. WISHTV reports that the department has asked the community to keep Sergeant Bishop, his family, and the Lawrence Police family in their prayers as they navigate through this profound loss.
The department's appreciation was extended to Loyal and True Pet Cremation Services by Loose Funeral Homes for their handling of K-9 Justice after his death. WRTV notes this acknowledgment in their coverage of the incident. The Lawrence Police Department, in dealing with the sudden departure of Justice, is reminded of the unique bond between K-9s and their handlers, a connection that transcends the line of duty and enters the realm of genuine companionship.
The passing of K-9 Justice serves as a somber reminder of the risk and vulnerabilities that come with dedicated service, including those served by our four-legged partners. As the Lawrence PD and community process this event, the duty and spirit of K-9 Justice are set to be honored, his legacy engrained within the hearts of those he served with and protected.
