The city of League City has expanded its connectivity to Friendswood with the new opening of an extension to FM 96, formally known as League City Parkway. The new stretch, featuring four lanes and a center median, starts from Cones Lane and ties directly into Friendswood Lakes Blvd, the opening of this section was marked with a ribbon-cutting ceremony yesterday, July 15, where League City Mayor Nick Long and Friendswood Mayor Mike Foreman were present to inaugurate the road.
The construction of the road, paid for by Hillwood Development who is responsible for the new Legacy subdivision nearby, serves as a pivotal east-west connecting artery aimed at alleviating the pressure on other congested roads including FM 518 and FM 646, it will not only benefit the increasing number of subdivisions but it's also expected to foster smoother traffic flow for the city's western districts, and while the road is currently catering to vehicular traffic, plans to incorporate sidewalks for pedestrian and bike use are on the horizon.
In a statement obtained by League City Texas' official website, Mayor Nick Long emphasized the strategic necessity of road expansions, stating, “As we are adding more and more subdivisions, it is important that we build out these arterial roadways to lower the traffic on other busy League City roadways such as FM 518 and FM 646.”
