Tragedy struck Benbrook Ranch Park last week when a City of Leander employee was shot after a confrontation in a park bathroom. The victim, 31, was performing cleaning duties when she accidentally disturbed the belongings of 32-year-old Hannah Morgan-Barber, who is believed to be homeless. According to the CBS Austin report, the situation escalated into a physical altercation, culminating in the suspect allegedly firing a Ruger LCP 380 ACP firearm at the city worker.
The accused, Morgan-Barber, reportedly fled the scene on a bicycle, only to be apprehended later by Cedar Park Police. When confronted, she is said to have asked the officers, "How did you know about my gun?" thereby almost appearing to directly confront her impending capture, CBS Austin reported. Police have subsequently charged Morgan-Barber with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, a second-degree felony. The firearm has been recovered and the injured employee was taken to St. David's Round Rock Medical Center, bearing a bullet lodged in her shoulder.
This incident adds to a string of unrelated troubled events at the park, with an earlier sexual assault case in May that is still unresolved. Leander Police have emphasized the safety of the park despite these incidents. Lt. Mike Mohler with Leander Police commented to FOX 7 Austin, "Random things happen at random times regardless of your employment or where you are, it just happened this time to be a city employee." He reassured the public that both cases are isolated events and that the park remains a safe environment.
Mohler advised parkgoers to remain vigilant, urging them to, "try not to fixate on your phone all the time or be misdirected by other things. Keep aware of your surroundings and if you see something suspicious, let us know." Both news sources emphasize that while the park is generally considered secure, this latest altercation stands as a stark reminder of the ever-present need for situational awareness, even in our community's most frequented spaces.
