In a recent and alarming uptick within Snohomish County, a four-year-old girl has sustained serious injuries after a three-story fall in Lynnwood, marking the 14th such incident this year in the county, according to FOX 13 Seattle. The string of falls, particularly prevalent in June with eight occurrences, has sparked urgent warnings from local officials regarding the dangers children face from unsecured windows in residential areas.
Alarming trends have been observed by firefighters and health safety experts as many of these falls are occurring in newer construction homes where bedrooms are often on the third floor, Shawneri Guzman of South County Fire stressed, explaining "We are seeing more severe injuries than in previous years as many falls are happening in new construction, single-family homes or townhomes where the bedrooms are located on the third story," she told My Edmonds News. In response to the crisis, fire departments and health safety advocates are reaching out to the community with advice and safety devices, urging the installment of window stops or guards and stressing the importance of keeping furniture away from windows to help curtail these preventable tragedies.
In the unsettling wake of the recent fall, local authorities are pushing for increased vigilance and proactive safety measures among parents and caregivers, particularly during the warmer months when windows are more frequently left open; a representative from the Everett Fire Department, Christie Veley, disclosed, "We don’t know how it happened but this is something that we see every year, unfortunately, in Snohomish County, whenever the weather warms up and people are opening their windows more to let the breeze in," as reported by KOMO News.
The repeated instances are drawing attention to the inadequacy of window screens as a means of fall prevention, meanwhile, officials are disseminating a host of preventative measures which include installing window stops or guards and strategic landscaping to cushion potential falls, as per My Edmonds News.
