A tragic drowning incident unfolded off the coast of Madeira Beach earlier this week. On the evening of July 22, deputies rushed to the scene near 12960 Gulf Boulevard after receiving reports of a distressed swimmer, later identified as 31-year-old Hector Colon. According to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, Colon was struggling in the water with his roommate, Angel Nunez, during an unexpected surge in the current. The official statement notes that, while Nunez managed to swim backwards to safety, Colon was seen calling for help before he was pulled under by the waves.
In a desperate bid to find assistance, Nunez returned to shore where a beachgoer promptly called 911. A collaborative search effort was then launched to quickly to locate Colon, involving the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office Marine Unit, Flight Unit, and Dive Team. Additional support was provided by the United States Coast Guard alongside the Treasure Island, Madeira Beach, and Seminole Fire Departments. Search operations persisted until late into the night, underpinning the urgency of the situation.
The following morning, at roughly 6:20 a.m. on July 23, a body matching Colon's description was discovered washed ashore near 14900 Gulf Boulevard. Deputies at the scene confirmed the identity and pronounced Colon deceased. The next of kin was notified of the tragic outcome, as reported by the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office. While the incident seems to be a tragic occurrence wrought by the unpredictable nature of the ocean, detectives are continuing to investigate to fully understand the events surrounding Colon's death.
