Tragedy struck amidst Independence Day revelry in Maine's Casco Bay as search efforts were launched for Edward Berke, a 30-year-old boater, now presumed dead after falling overboard. The U.S. Coast Guard spearheaded the frantic search after Berke was reported missing around 8 p.m. last night, having reportedly gone overboard near Clapboard Island during the Fourth of July festivities.
The Coast Guard deployed both aerial and marine units to vigorously scour the waters surrounding Chebeague Island, Cousins Island, and Falmouth, according to NBC10 Boston affiliate News Center Maine. Efforts to locate Berke initially continued through the night, with Falmouth Marine Patrol and the harbormaster actively participating in the operation.
Despite these exhaustive measures, hope diminished as the search extended today without a sign of Berke. After more than 15 surface and air assets combed an area of nearly 350 square miles for over 30 hours, authorities made the decision to suspend the operation. The U.S. Coast Guard station in Cape Cod also contributed a helicopter team to aid in the large-scale search.
"The Coast Guard says they believe the boater, identified as 30-year-old Edward Berke, is dead," as reported by WGME. The grim conclusion came as a disheartening end to the frantic efforts – involving nine state, local, and federal agencies – to find and hopefully to quickly rescue Berke.
Official updates have not yet provided further details on the circumstances surrounding Berke’s disappearance or the next steps that will be taken by the authorities. The community holds its breath and hearts grow heavy as they come to terms with the tragedy that unfolded in the waters that are usually a backdrop for celebration and joy.
