A wildfire's blaze northwest of Phoenix sparked not only an environmental concern but also a deceptive maneuver by an individual masquerading as a firefighter and instructing unsuspecting residents to evacuate. This incident was reported as occurring on July 10, during the struggle against the Hillside Fire near Congress, according to FOX 10 Phoenix. Yavapai County Sheriff's Office was alerted about a man telling residents to leave their homes, claiming they were in imminent danger, an admonishment that turned out to be unfounded since evacuations had not been officially ordered.
Rodney Patrick Parent, the accused, had previously been associated with the Yarnell Fire Department but was let go months before the incident. Amid tense moments for residents placed on SET status, standing by for potential evacuation, Parent's actions led to unnecessary panic. Residents identified the false firefighter as Parent, a man already known to deputies, as detailed by ABC 15 News. Deputies confirmed with the Yarnell Fire Chief that Parent was no longer affiliated with his organization.
The Yarnell impersonator was spotted by deputies while driving down the street near his address. Upon his arrest, authorities uncovered fire-related attire and equipment in his possession, including Yarnell fire clothing, wildland fire pants, and a hardhat equipped with a lamp—all of which matched descriptions provided by neighbors. Crucial to the case, home surveillance footage allegedly captured Parent at homes, ringing doorbells and declaring himself as part of the "fire department."
Further inquiry by law enforcement revealed signs of impairment while Parent was in custody. He faces a litany of charges including, but not limited to, impersonating a public servant and DUI, with results for blood alcohol content pending. The aftermath of his deceit has prompted the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office to remind the public that any authentic evacuation notices would be communicated through verified channels or by personnel directly, as opposed to unauthorized individuals on rogue operations.
