A man was critically wounded in a shooting last night at the Chisca Apartments in Downtown Memphis, as confirmed by the Memphis Police Department. According to Action News 5, the incident occurred when a vehicle approached the victims' car as they were pulling into the apartment complex and opened fire, resulting in the man sustaining a gunshot wound to his lower back.
The victim was transported to Regional One Hospital by his mother, who was also with her two granddaughters when the incident took place. None of the children were injured in the shooting. The victim's car, found with 8-10 bullet holes, was later towed by police from a family member's home. As reported by Local Memphis, shell casings were eventually discovered at the apartment complex by investigators following the shooting.
In a statement to WREG, the mother recounted that the shooting began as she was entering a gate code to the Chisca Apartments. She saw three suspects wielding long guns, though she did not get a clear look at them. The victim himself believes that his family was merely caught in the crossfire of an undisclosed conflict.
Residents of the apartment complex have expressed concerns about safety, particularly given that the complex lacks surveillance cameras. In interviews with WREG, one resident described feeling unsafe and reconsidering their decision to live downtown following this incident. The recent event follows the "Operation Saturday Night Live" initiative by the Memphis Police, aiming to reduce crime in areas with high call volumes, an increasing concern among the community.
Despite police efforts, weekday security presence appears to be less visible, contributing to a heightened sense of vulnerability among residents. The police have confirmed their intention to continue the initiative until downtown crime is more effectively controlled. Currently, no arrests have been made in connection with last night's shooting. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH.
