Two people were shot early Monday in South Memphis, one of them critically, after what police believe began as an argument at a motorcycle club. Memphis Police Department officers found one injured person at the scene, while another arrived separately at a hospital with a gunshot wound.
According to FOX13 Memphis, one of the two victims was taken to Regional One Hospital, where another person also showed up with a gunshot wound. Police say they believe the shooting may have stemmed from an escalation of an argument at a motorcycle club, though the exact club involved has not been publicly identified. It remains unclear whether any suspects have been identified or detained, and the current condition of the critically injured victim has not been released.
Critically injured trauma patients from South Memphis are typically routed to Regional One Health's Elvis Presley Trauma Center, the only Level 1 Trauma Center within 150 miles, serving West Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas and Missouri. The center treats more than 4,500 trauma patients annually, a scale that underscores how central it is to emergency care across the entire region.

This is not the first time an argument at a motorcycle club has boiled over into gunfire in the Memphis area recently. South Memphis falls under the patrol territory of the Memphis Police Department's Raines Station, which covers 78.4 square miles and about 102,000 residents, as well as the Crump Station, which covers 35.8 square miles. Those precincts handle the bulk of law enforcement response for the area where Monday's shooting occurred.

The shooting comes even as Memphis has seen substantial declines in violent crime this year. The Memphis Police Department reported that overall Part I crime fell 36% year-to-date through the second quarter of 2026, with homicides down 60% and aggravated assaults down 30% compared to the same period in 2025. The department also reported that its Homicide Bureau posted an 81% clearance rate in the second quarter of 2026, up sharply from 47% during the same stretch last year.
The Memphis Shelby Crime Commission separately reported that the major violent crime rate across Shelby County fell 30.4% during the first six months of 2026 compared to the same period a year earlier. City of Memphis public safety records show 697 aggravated assault charges and 107 homicide charges logged year-to-date through late August 2026. Citywide, Memphis recorded 184 intentional homicides in 2025, a steep drop from 250 in 2024 and 351 in 2023, according to figures compiled on Wikipedia.
Despite that downward trajectory, incidents like Monday's shooting show how quickly a verbal dispute at a social venue can turn deadly. Under Tennessee Code Annotated § 39-13-102, an assault involving the display or use of a deadly weapon, or one resulting in serious bodily injury, is classified as aggravated assault, a Class C felony punishable by three to 15 years in prison and fines up to $10,000. No arrests or charges connected to Monday's shooting have been announced, and Memphis police have not released further details on the circumstances of the argument that preceded the gunfire.
