A fatal shooting involving a Churchill police officer and a 48-year-old man occurred Thursday night in Forest Hills, resulting in the man's death. The incident first unfolded around 9:30 p.m. when officers from Churchill, Forest Hills, and Swissvale were called to the 200 block of Glasgow Road after a disturbance was reported, as per TribLIVE.
Upon their arrival, officers heard what sounded like a firearm being loaded. A shot was then fired at 9:33 p.m., and a man, who had been armed outside the residence, was shot by an officer from the Churchill Police Department. The man was hit in the torso and, after being taken in critical condition to the hospital, was pronounced dead later according to WTAE.
Neighbors reported hearing alarming sounds that evening. "I heard a gunshot and screaming, a woman screaming," as per WTAE. "It's really just a shock," added neighbor Deborah Watkins. "We don't really expect this to happen in Forest Hills. Nothing like this really happens in Forest Hills. Now we're just hoping and praying that everyone in that house is safe." Their accounts paint a scene marked by panic and disruption in a community unaccustomed to such violence.
The Allegheny County Police's Homicide Unit has taken up the investigation while the names of neither the man killed nor the officer involved have been released, the call for information has been put out to the public.
