A tragic incident unfolded in Phoenix as a man was struck and killed by a city bus late Tuesday night. According to FOX 10 Phoenix, the Phoenix Police Department reported that officers arrived at the scene near Central Avenue and Van Buren Street around 11:45 p.m. to find the male pedestrian with grave injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The identity of the man has not been released, with authorities likely still in the process of notifying next of kin. The city bus in question remained on the scene following the incident, as the Phoenix Police continued their investigation into the precise details surrounding the accident, as detailed by 12News.
"Preliminary information suggests that the bus was westbound on Van Buren Street and making a right turn onto Central Avenue when the pedestrian attempted to get the bus to stop. The man was banging on the door and walking next to the bus. The bus driver did not stop due to the area not being designated as a bus stop. The pedestrian lost his footing and fell into the roadway after which he was struck by the bus," Phoenix Police noted in a statement obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix. The driver's decision not to halt at a non-designated stop has since beckoned a scrutinizing look into city policy and public transportation safety measures. Details will be further examined as the investigation proceeds.
A developing story and updates will be closely followed as more information becomes available to the public.
