The Manhattan Beach Police Department, in their weekly crime summary, reported a total of 38 crime reports taken from July 4 to July 10, with theft and vandalism emerging as the predominant concerns.
One notable event in the city took place on Independence Day at a local Target, where a suspected pair of thieves attempted a grand heist and were subsequently arrested for grand theft and drug-related charges. The culprits, after filling their cart with goods, dashed out of the store without paying and entered a getaway vehicle. An eagle-eyed witness provided a swift vehicle description, enabling officers to apprehend the thieves before they could disappear. Furthermore, a resident of the 100 block of 45th Street became the victim of a burglary, losing an e-bike and charger when an unknown perpetrator gained access to a supposedly secure garage.
The city's Target seems to have been a focal point for theft activity, with another incident occurring just a day after, on July 5. according to the police summary, a loss prevention officer at the store witnessed a known suspect concealing items and alerted the authorities. The suspect brandished a pair of pliers upon exiting, attempting to sever security sensors from his ill-gotten wares before police could intervene and secure an arrest.
In a separate episode of theft on July 5, a resident found themselves victim to a pick-pocket at the 1200 block of Valley Drive. The victim's misplaced trust in the safety of his surroundings left his wallet vulnerable to the hands of a thief—credit cards and cash vanishing from a backpack rested momentarily unattended on a bar stool. Geological Drive also saw an act of vandalism with windows broken and band-aids set alight at a local school, pointing to the unsettling reality that nothing, not even education's sanctuaries, is immune from the city's tide of misdemeanors.
