
A tragic event unfolded Saturday night in Cobb County, Georgia, as a 16-year-old pedestrian, Jaylen Fitzpatrick, was struck and killed by a driver who then fled the scene. The hit-and-run occurred around 11 p.m. at the intersection of Powder Springs Street (SR 360) and Cunningham Road. According to police gathered by FOX 5 Atlanta, the teenager was walking in the right lane when a red Hyundai Santa Fe collided with him.
Marietta City Schools subsequently identified the victim as Jaylen Fitzpatrick, a "rising junior" at Marietta High School, as reported by Atlanta News First. Cobb County Police is have issued an appeal for any information regarding the incident or the vehicle involved. The Cobb County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed that Fitzpatrick sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The school district's superintendent, Grant Rivera, expressed the community's sorrow and offered support to the teenager's family. "School administration reached out to Jaylen’s mother and has offered to support the family," Rivera stated. "We care deeply about Jaylen, we care deeply about his family, and we will make sure that we support both our students at Marietta High School, the staff, and his family in whatever way we can," as mentioned by FOX 5 Atlanta.
As the local community grapples with the loss, Cobb County Police is urging residents and potential witnesses to come forward. A vehicle, a red Hyundai Santa Fe, is central to the case.
