The community of McCandless has been shaken by disturbing allegations against the director of a local daycare. Melissa Populo, the director at Gloworms Academy, is facing serious charges over the mistreatment of five toddlers in her care. The 38-year-old McKees Rocks woman was charged with five counts of endangering the welfare of children. The accusations came to light after an employee reported observing Populo hit a young child on video for not eating, according to CBS News Pittsburgh.
Investigations commenced after the employee's report, as McCandless Police looked to substantiate the claims of abuse. Populo denies the allegations, stating to authorities that she would never hit a child and expressing her fondness for children. Nevertheless, a staff member disclosed to police that this was not an isolated incident, with multiple instances of abuse reportedly caught on camera, including slapping, arm-grabbing, food-shoving, and dragging of a child by the arm. It's alleged that Populo had slapped a toddler and, shockingly, carried another upside down by the ankle.
In addition, The specific incidents included a child being picked up by the ankle while strapped in a chair, and another case where an act of supposed encouragement - high-fiving a child after each bite - was potentially a cover-up for abuse. A witness presented videos to the authorities that led a child advocacy center doctor to conclude the toddlers were "at risk of injury," with a statement in the criminal complaint emphasizing the "cruelty of the actions of (Populo) and the lack of empathy shown," as reported by TribLIVE.
The hearing set to unfold on July 17 before District Judge Matthew J. Brungo will be integral to determining the outcome of these grave accusations, as detailed by WTAE. The court appearance might bring to light further evidence and insights into the events that allegedly took place under the roof of Gloworms Academy. As court proceedings approach, a community can hardly breathe, anticipating justice and remedies for the vulnerable victims at the center of this troubling scenario. An attorney for Populo has yet to be listed in the court records.
