The Memphis Fire Department responded to a fire in the Frayser neighborhood, effectively extinguishing the blaze early Thursday morning. The incident, which took place at a structure on Whitney Avenue near Northgate Street around 3:30 a.m., saw firefighters tackling flames that reportedly originated in the building's front living room area. According to Action News 5, the fire has been classified as "incendiary," suggesting a deliberate ignition.
While the building was unoccupied during the incident, preventing any injuries, it was not always so. Neighbors relayed to WREG that the structure, once a residence, had been converted into a church and was utilized by a preacher to shelter those in need. The former place of solace has, however, been abandoned for an unspecified duration, as witnesses reported.
The fire's impact was not limited to the loss of the structure alone. The Memphis Fire Department has estimated the cost of damages to be around $59,000. As per FOX13 Memphis, the adjoining building, also a religious institution, was fortunately not affected by the fire. This stroke of luck preserved a sanctuary that stood vulnerably beside the swallowed home.
With the fire now extinguished and damages assessed, the Memphis Fire Department continues its investigation into the exact cause of the fire. As the story of the engulfed structure in Frayser unfolds, the community grapples with the loss of what once was a bastion of hope – a place for the dispossessed. The stark reminder that such tragedy can strike where once stood a haven for many resonates beyond the ash and the soot.
