A collision in Frayser involving a Memphis police officer and another vehicle led to both drivers being hospitalized Wednesday evening. According to Action News 5, the crash occurred on North Watkins Street near the Frayser Furniture outlet and resulted in severe front-end damage to the squad car.
Memphis police received notification of the incident at approximately 4:43 p.m. The officer involved was reportedly en route to a call when the accident happened. As reported by FOX13, a witness stated that the squad car was driving up Watkins with its lights and sirens on when the accident occurred, suggesting the other vehicle, a pickup truck, may have unexpectedly pulled in front of the patrol car.
The officer at the wheel and the other man involved, the driver of the truck, were quickly taken to local hospitals with injuries that were deemed noncritical. WREG reports that the collision took place at the intersection of Corning Avenue and North Watkins Street, adding further details to the rapidly developing situation.
Akilah Speaks, an onlooker who saw the crash's aftermath, told FOX13, "Basically, there has been a lot of senseless driving out here and it’s unfortunate that a cop was involved." "That just goes to show that we are going to have to do better on both sides. We are going to have to learn to drive with some sense. That was just uncalled for," Akilah added.
