The Memphis community of Hickory Hill is reeling after a two-vehicle crash on Sunday night claimed three lives and left several others injured. Memphis Police Department (MPD) is actively searching for six vehicles that were seen leaving the accident scene, which is being investigated as a hit-and-run. Local Memphis reported that the tragic incident occurred around 8 p.m. at the intersection of Hickory Hill Road and Sunny Morning Drive, where an Infiniti QX70 collided with a Lexus GX470, resulting in significant damage and casualties.
Authorities provided details regarding the victims of the crash. In the Infiniti SUV, the driver was declared dead at the scene, while a 21-year-old man, a 23-year-old man, and a 17-year-old boy are reported to be in critical condition. Additionally, a 10-year-old boy and a 14-year-old boy sustained non-critical injuries. The Lexus bore its toll, with its driver and a 51-year-old male passenger also pronounced dead at the scene. These details were confirmed by Action News 5.
Tanya Allen, a nearby resident, described the aftermath of the crash to FOX13 Memphis: "It was a big mess. The cars were mangled, and the horns were going off”. Allen described the speed of the vehicles as "very fast and out of control," attributing the chaos and destruction to drivers behaving like maniacs.
Responding to community concerns about speeding, Pearl Walker, a City Councilwoman representing the Hickory Hill area, has begun addressing the issue. "The people are saying they want the speed limit to be lowered, so I've already reached out to MPD," she said, as per Action News 5. She is looking to work closely with city engineering and MPD to comprehensively review speed limits and safety measures in the hope of preventing future tragedies.
MPD is urging anyone with information about the crash to come forward and is especially seeking to speak with the drivers of the six vehicles seen leaving the incident. They are considered potential witnesses to this severe hit-and-run. Any individuals with knowledge of the case are encouraged to contact CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH.
