A Memphis woman has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of an employee at Church's Chicken in Orange Mound, as confirmed by Memphis Police Department (MPD). Monica Williams, 45, is accused of the fatal shooting of Anitra West, a 48-year-old mother, following an altercation that escalated beyond the drive-thru window. According to Action News 5, West's colleague, who was also on the scene, witnessed the dispute and heard a gunshot moments after West had stepped outside on the evening of July 8.
Details emerged from an affidavit stating West had been in an argument with Williams about payment for food. After deciding to skip the purchase due to the tension, Williams reportedly drove away only to return later to the scene. It was at this point, West, who was taking a moment outside, told a friend on the phone, "Girl, this same girl with the purple hair I just got into it with just pulled back up in the parking lot," as she bore witness to Williams's return. Unable to shield herself from fate, loud noises followed and silence ensued, ending with West being rushed to Regional One Hospital where she was pronounced dead, as reported by Action News 5.
In an emotional response to the arrest, the victim's former husband, Lorenzo West Jr., expressed his outlook on justice and the healing process. "We are looking forward to seeing the law work its way out, you know?" Lorenzo said in an interview obtained by WREG. He depicted Anitra as a maternal figure to many, praising her nurturing spirit and impact on young people throughout her years of service in the restaurant industry.
Williams's arrest came after intense scrutiny on social media, which was instrumental in police efforts. Her alleged involvement in the homicide has been widely circulated, prompting a swift issue of a warrant for her arrest. "I hope she makes peace and asks God for forgiveness. That's all I can hope for," Lorenzo shared with WREG, signaling a desire for Williams to reflect on her actions. In a strongly worded message, the victim's daughter, Zoe, told FOX13, "I hope you rot in hell when you die and I hope you don't ever get to see your kids ever again," voicing her anger and distress.
Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy expressed gratitude for the quick apprehension of Williams, emphasizing the gravity of the crime. "We will work hard to see she is held behind bars pending trial and punished appropriately for her actions," Mulroy told FOX13. Williams's past criminal record includes a 2009 conviction for stabbing a pregnant woman and assaulting her with a tree branch. She received a three-year sentence for aggravated assault. Williams is scheduled to be arraigned today.
