As the summer heat intensifies, the City of Mesa is stepping up its efforts to aid residents grappling with extreme temperatures by hosting water donation events. The city's Mesa Hydration Donation Campaign aims to collect 700,000 water bottles for those in need, primarily the unsheltered population most at risk during this harsh season. In response to the pressing need, there are two upcoming drop-off events: August 21 at the Mesa Convention Center and August 28 at the Mesa Arts Center, details shared by the City of Mesa website.
The campaign, which began on May 6, has already gathered 363,849 bottles, marking a crucial halfway point toward its stated goal. "Donating a case of water or making a modest contribution could be a lifesaver," Mesa Mayor John Giles spoke candidly about the community's generosity and the necessity of the drive, given the current climate risks facing the most vulnerable populations, his sentiments echoed by the City of Mesa's recent announcement. The city also encourages online contributions for those unable to donate in person.
Another innovative aspect of the campaign is the One Ton Water Challenge which urges businesses and community members to donate a pallet of water, each pallet weighs more than one ton and costs about $210, it's a call to action designed by the collaboration between the Mesa Chamber of Commerce, United Food Bank, and the City of Mesa. Mandy Hodges at United Food Bank can be contacted for those wanting to participate in this impactful initiative, as per the City of Mesa.
