In downtown Miami, a routine act of theft took an unexpected turn when a man allegedly perpetrated retail theft and, in the process, left behind a child. Elpidio Amores, 58, was arrested by the Miami Police Department after he reportedly walked out of a CVS store with beer he didn't pay for. The incident took place at the CVS located at 170 Southeast 3rd Avenue. As reported by NBC Miami, Amores entered the store with a stroller that held two children. Amidst his attempt to quickly remove the alcoholic beverages, a child slipped from the stroller.
Upon realizing he had inadvertently left the child behind, Amores made the choice to quickly return to the scene, a detail confirmed by the Miami Police Department. After his detainment, the Department of Children and Families was alerted to follow up on the wellbeing of the children involved. In a post by Crime Watch Miami on Instagram, it was noted that the Miami Police's special victims unit is involved in the investigation, laying out the gravity of the situation as it touches not only on criminality but also on the sphere of child protection.
Amores, now facing charges for retail theft as per the Miami Police, left more than just beer unpaid; he left uncertainties regarding the care and safety of the youngest, most vulnerable amongst us.
