A fugitive in Kalamazoo was involved in a police shooting incident on Thursday afternoon, during which two Michigan State Police troopers discharged their weapons, as confirmed by the Michigan State Police Fifth District. The situation unfolded just before 3 p.m. near Regent Street and Mt. Olivet Road when officers attempted to apprehend the suspect, aged 35, for outstanding warrants, as detailed by WWMT.
The man, reportedly walking from his driveway into the road wielding two handguns, ignored commands from the officers and made movements that were described as furtive, at which point things escalated when two troopers fired upon him he then surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident; the Michigan State Police Fifth District communicated via X. Remarkably, no one was injured in the encounter. The suspect was apprehended on warrants related to bond forfeiture and meth-related charges, with additional charges expected to be pursued.
Following the standard protocol in such cases, the two troopers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid leave while the incident is under investigation. This administrative measure is in place to ensure a thorough review of the events, as stated by the MSP Fifth District. The investigation is currently being handled by the MSP Sixth District IRT detectives, who are looking into all aspects of the shooting.
According to details provided in a post by MSP South West MI, preliminary investigations indicate that the officers were present to execute an arrest warrant when they encountered the suspect, the man's identity has not been released pending further proceedings and it remains open as to whether his actions posed an imminent threat at the time he was shot at. The community awaits the outcome of the full investigation, and updates are expected as the Sixth District IRT continues its work on the case.
