Firefighters from the west metro area responded to a fire at a former nursing home this past Friday, successfully containing the blaze that broke out in the early evening. The Minnetonka Fire Department received reports of smoke at approximately 6 p.m. and discovered an active fire upon arrival. According to a press release from the City of Minnetonka, which can be read here, the response necessitated an upgrade to a two-alarm call, bringing in additional fire departments from the surrounding communities.
The team effort concentrated on fighting the fire, which was located in a single room and resulted in significant damage from both heat and smoke. While the building was unoccupied and slated for demolition, one firefighter, during the call, sustained a minor injury caused by a fall. The firefighter received treatment at North Memorial Hospital and was subsequently released.
Crews on the scene came from various nearby cities including Plymouth, Hopkins, Wayzata, Golden Valley, Excelsior, and Mound, who all joined forces under Minnetonka's lead. The concerted efforts lasted several hours as firefighters conducted extensive overhaul operations to ensure the fire was fully extinguished and posed no further threats.
While the firefighter's injury was unfortunate, thanks were given to all the first responders for their diligent work in containing the fire and ensuring public safety.
