The anxious night-long search for a 20-year-old man who had disappeared while swimming at Lake Lanier concluded with a sense of relief as he was found safe this morning. Zachary Rutledge, hailing from Winder, became the subject of a rescue operation after he was reported missing at Burton Mill Park on Lake Lanier last night. FOX 5 Atlanta reports that Rutledge managed to flag down a Hall County Sheriff’s Office deputy nearly 13 hours after he was last seen by his companions.
Details of the incident reveal that Rutledge was swimming with friends when they lost sight of him, leading to uncertainty over whether he had exited the water or left the park by foot. The ensuing search efforts were a multi-agency collaboration involving the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Hall County Fire Rescue, and the Georgia State Patrol Aviation Unit, which all failed to immediately locate Rutledge. In a statement obtained by Channel 2 Action News, Rutledge explained that lacking a phone prevented him from making contact for help and that he didn't know to recognize that the GSP helicopters were actively searching for him.
Rutledge's friends had dialed 911 to report him missing yesterday after the separation occurred. It was the next day when a deputy, while patrolling the park, was fortunately able to locate Rutledge. According to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, the young man had spent the night at the park after swimming to an island and upon his return, realized that his friends had already departed.
