The tragic loss of Fawzan Hassan, a 6-year-old boy with autism, has left a Montgomery County community in mourning after his body was discovered in a pond at Bohrer Park, Gaithersburg. According to FOX 5 DC, the young boy had been reported missing since Saturday, and it was not until the following day that a community member found his remains near the site where he was last seen.
Devoted search efforts by multiple law enforcement agencies and local volunteers persisted for two days, during which a collective sentiment of hope and unease hovered over all those gathered, the boy was part of an Ethiopian community event when he vanished and his absence was shortly thereafter realized when his grandmother temporarily stepped away to attend to his sister.
Eventually, a group of volunteers spotted the body in the pond and immediately alerted the authorities; WTOP reports that the Montgomery County police confirmed the heart-rending discovery yesterday evening. The sudden emergence of Fawzan in the pond, as stated by a Montgomery County police spokesperson, happened at about 5:25 p.m., and the community, already tightly knit, had to now contend with the shared pain of an irreplaceable loss.
Azeb Adere, from the Ethiopian Eritrean Special Needs Community that helped organize the search efforts expressed her profound sorrow for the boy's family, saying to NBC Washington, "I'm so sorry for the parents. I feel so bad and for communities to learn this so it doesn't happen to another child." Meanwhile, local police stressed the need for constant vigilance, especially for parents of children with special needs, stating that "your head’s gotta be on a swivel," reflecting a sentiment that, while true, does little to alleviate the present grief.
