Police are seeking assistance after the assault of four unhoused individuals in Veterans Plaza earlier this month, with suspects yet to be identified amidst heightened community concerns. The assault, which took place in the early morning hours of July 16 in Silver Spring, involved six suspects, described as five Black males and one Black female. According to a press release from the Montgomery County Department of Police, the suspects emerged from a dark-colored Honda Civic on Ellsworth Drive, near Fenton Street and initiated the unprovoked attack on the victims while they were asleep.
Two male victims were sleeping on a bench when they were accosted, and another was chased along Ellsworth Drive the female victim was punched in the face as she slept at a table, her phone smashed as she attempted to call for help. The attacks have left two of the individuals hospitalized, underscoring the vulnerability of the unhoused population in public spaces. In an effort to locate the alleged perpetrators, police have released surveillance video footage hoping the public might recognize the suspects and come forward with information; suspect descriptions range from a Black male in a black ski mask, grey shirt, and white and grey sneakers, to a Black female wearing a black short-sleeve t-shirt, black pants, and white shoes.
The incident adds another layer to the ongoing discourse about safety and homelessness, raising questions about societal responsibility and the protection of those without shelter.
