A significant disruption occurred on eastbound Grand River Avenue near Lake Chemung in Genoa Township, Livingston County, following a series of events involving a carjacking and a police chase that ended in a crash. The roadway was reduced to a single lane as Michigan State Police conducted an investigation into the crash of a vehicle that was reported stolen. The authorities have advised motorists to plan alternative routes due to the expected impact on traffic.
According to ClickOnDetroit, deputies from the Ingham County Sheriff’s Department initially attempted to stop the vehicle for a traffic violation yesterday. The pursuit was terminated when the driver fled. Later, the same vehicle was involved in a carjacking in Stockbridge, where the driver, a man in his sixties from Fenton, implied he possessed a weapon to commandeer a white Chevy Z-71 pickup.
The incident escalated as Michigan State Police located the carjacked truck in Fowlerville on Grand River Avenue and gave chase alongside deputies from Livingston County. Near Owosso Road, the authorities deployed spike strips, which succeeded in deflating the driver-side tires of the suspect's vehicle. Nevertheless, the pursuit continued eastbound at high speeds until the carjacked pickup collided with a Lexus SUV, as reported by MLive.
In the aftermath, despite having deflated tires, the suspect managed to drive the Chevy pickup until crashing into an SUV, which resulted in minor injuries to the two occupants. They were subsequently transported to Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. Police arrested the man driving the Chevy on scene, as MLive further detailed. The suspect was also taken to the hospital for medical clearance before being booked into the Ingham County Jail, with charges pending in both Livingston and Ingham counties.
Livingston County Sheriff Mike Murphy provided insight into the preceding events, revealing to WHMI that the suspect had embarked on what appeared to be “a bit of a crime spree.” The incident had reportedly begun with a home invasion and vehicle theft in Ingham County, leading to the subsequent carjacking and chase that ended near the Kohl’s department store after the deployment of stop sticks by authorities. The suspect is now in the custody of Ingham County officials, having sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the collision.
