The Navajo Nation Division of Natural Resources has announced the return of the Annual Navajo Nation Fair, set for September 4-8 at the Navajo Nation Fairgrounds in Window Rock, with this year's theme, “Honoring Heritage: Celebrating Harvest, Livelihood & Kinship,” emphasizing preserving the cultural heritage of the Navajo people. As reported by The Navajo Nation Office of the President, the event will unfold under the new leadership of Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren, with promises of improved financial oversight following past fiscal difficulties.
Division of Natural Resources executive director, Mike Halona, has stated, "Through careful planning and resource management, we will make sure to spend every dollar wisely." Ready to bring changes, Halona and his team moved the Navajo Nation Fair Office to the division headquarters earlier this year aiming to revamp operations at the historic fairgrounds. According to an announcement on their website, the restructured office is now committed to ensuring that the funds are used in a manner that not only upholds the event's integrity but also supports local businesses.
Fairgoers can expect an array of traditional activities that showcase the rich tapestry of Navajo culture, along with increased visibility from Navajo Nation divisions, departments, and programs. With an established history as a focal point of Navajo culture, attracting participants from the 110 Navajo chapters, this year's fair seeks to continue building that community connection while emphasizing fiscal responsibility. "This momentous event isn’t just about tradition," Halona explained, with an indication of embracing modern financial prudence drawn from the hopes pinned on turning over a new fiscal leaf.
