In what can only be described as a textbook case of vigilance crossing paths with opportunity, a Nelson Township man managed to disrupt a would-be intruder from breaking into his neighbor's home. The incident unfolded on Tuesday morning near the intersection of Myers Lake Avenue and 20 Mile Road. As FOX 17 reported, the 68-year-old man noticed an individual, clad in a hoodie, mask, and gloves, making his suspicious approach towards a neighbor's driveway.
According to the Kent County Sheriff's Office, a loud noise prompted the man to follow the suspect where he then came face to face with the grim tableau of broken glass near the garage service door, without hesitation, he confronted the suspect who then fled into the nearby woods sparking an intense manhunt that pivotal morning. While initial searches by deputies, alongside troopers and K9s from the Michigan State Police, turned up empty, their perseverance paid off as the suspect emerged from his woodland refuge roughly an hour later and was promptly arrested, WZZM 13 detailed in their coverage of the incident.
The stealthy would-be burglar may have thought he had been shrouded by the sanctuary of nature, yet detectives remained vigilant in their watch, an effort that ensured the suspect's eventual capture. Celebrating the critical role of the community, the KCSO was quoted by WZZM 13 as saying they value "our observant community members for calling them when they observe suspicious activity."
