The Waterfront Park is now a gleaming active recreation area, unveiled much to the delight of locals looking for a mix of structured and spontaneous play. The official nod to get active came with a ribbon-cutting courtesy of Board of Supervisors Vice Chair Terra Lawson-Remer.
According to the County of San Diego, the space is kitted out with a basketball court, two pickleball courts, a quintet of fitness stations, your standard table tennis setup, and, for animal lovers, a secure off-leash dog area with agility equipment. It's like a grown-up playground but with the bonus of drinking fountains and benches because, let's face it, sometimes you need to take five.
Not just a boon for the body but also for the wallet—The County’s Department of Parks and Recreation has made a budget-friendly move. The site's free access equipment is a nod to inclusivity, ensuring anyone, regardless of socioeconomic status, can play a round of pickup ball or get in a workout without the sting of a monthly gym fee.
What's more, the open hours cater to early risers and night owls alike – the area is accessible from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., and if you're not bringing your gear, you can check out equipment during ample windows in summer, and slightly earlier curtain calls come fall and spring. In a sustainable twist, drought-tolerant flora frames the 1.25-acre area, serving up a dash of greenery and a buffer against the cacophony of competition.
