Vons is transitioning its Escondido supermarket at 2345 E. Valley Parkway into a remodeled Albertsons, a move the company describes as an investment in the local shopping experience. According to the company’s timetable, the pharmacy will stop serving customers on April 16, and the grocery floor will transition on May 1 to coincide with the site's re-grand opening under the Albertsons banner. The switch means the Vons name will disappear from that stretch of East Valley Parkway, though the site will continue to operate as a neighborhood grocery hub.
A layoff notice reviewed by The San Diego Union-Tribune originally pegged the number of affected workers at about 65, including bakery staff, meat and seafood workers, four pharmacy professionals, and roughly three dozen clerks. However, Albertsons Companies has clarified that their priority is supporting these associates through the transition. "We are working to identify opportunities for affected associates at nearby stores, consistent with applicable laws and the labor agreement," the company stated in an official release.
Company timeline and ownership
The Vons at 2345 E. Valley Parkway currently operates under the umbrella of Albertsons Companies, which includes Vons among its regional grocery banners. The company noted that while they continuously evaluate store performance, this specific change is part of a focus on growth. "Occasionally it’s necessary to close locations that aren’t growing or meeting financial expectations," the company explained, adding that they are "investing in locations that deliver the best experience."
Union protections and bumping rights
The transition paperwork confirms the store is unionized and explains that the staffing changes are subject to "bumping rights." In practice, this means more senior employees can use their seniority to displace junior workers at other unionized stores where there are openings. This process, combined with the company's efforts to relocate staff to nearby neighborhood locations, aims to minimize the number of people who ultimately lose their jobs.
What comes next for shoppers and staff
For customers, the key dates are straightforward: pharmacy services will conclude after April 16, and the location will celebrate its re-grand opening as a remodeled Albertsons on May 1. While the Vons brand is departing, the company remains committed to serving the Escondido community at its other area locations. Workers named in the initial notice will have options defined by union agreements and company procedures, and the company directs employees with questions to consult with their supervisors.
