The Atlanta Police Department has recently released additional footage capturing a high-intensity chase involving a stolen ambulance that occurred on April 17, 2024. The pursuit, which bore an unsettling resemblance to scenes from a video game, unfolded after La’Darius Williams, 27, commandeered the vehicle from Piedmont Henry Hospital with medics onboard. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the newly published videos provide multiple perspectives, including dash and body camera views as well as aerial footage from a helicopter.
As reported by 11Alive, the chase spanned multiple jurisdictions, with the Atlanta Police Department and Georgia State Patrol working in tandem to bring the situation to a resolution. During the chase, Williams is reported to have flouted traffic laws, colliding with various objects including a civilian vehicle, mailboxes, and crashing through properties. In an attempt to immobilize the hijacked vehicle, officers deployed stop sticks on numerous occasions and executed tactical maneuvers.
The pursuit reached a fevered climax as the ambulance, now on three wheels, teetered precariously towards a dead end. It was at this juncture that a Georgia State Patrol trooper managed to execute a pit maneuver, which sent the ambulance hurtling across a grassy median and into a light pole, as per footage captured on the dash cam. Following the crash, Williams attempted to escape on foot but was promptly apprehended by law enforcement officers and subsequently detained at the Clayton County Jail.
Amidst the chaotic scene, a statement to FOX 5 Atlanta indicates that the medics who were initially in the vehicle at the time of its commandeering managed to escape from the moving ambulance. Furthermore, the released video footage encapsulates the sheer recklessness of the event, with the stolen ambulance seen weaving through traffic and the consequential patrol efforts to safely end a dangerous run through the streets.
