Miami-Dade County is greening up its neighborhood with a new mini-park at historic Liberty Square, set to provide residents with a much-needed space for recreation and community bonding. The park, located at 5905 NW 15th Avenue in Northwest Miami, will be inaugurated next Wednesday, with Mayor Daniella Levine Cava alongside District 3 Commissioner Keon Hardemon and Parks Director Maria Nardi leading the dedication. "This park is more than just a space for recreation; it is a testament to our commitment to improving the quality of life for all residents, where children can play, where families can bond, and neighbors can connect,” Mayor Levine Cava said in a recent Miami-Dade government release.
Harking back to the 1930s, the Liberty Square area holds historical significance as the first public housing development for Black Americans in the USA. Acquired by the County in 1971, Area 227 has long been a community gathering spot. “Residents deserve a beautiful and safe place to recreate within walking distance of their homes. Revitalization efforts like this demonstrate that we value our residents’ well-being and want them to feel rooted in their community,” Commissioner Keon Hardemon told Miami-Dade.
The makeover includes a new landscaping design, with an open lawn, and an assortment of trees and shrubs. Park-goers will also find a relocated play sculpture, refreshed pathways, pavers, and additional amenities like wooden and iron benches and bike racks. Funding for this project was sourced in part from the federal government's Community Development Block Grant Programs, investing in the community's infrastructure and overall appeal.
At the helm of the parks department, Maria Nardi emphasized the importance of green spaces to community health and well-being. “We are excited to revitalize this park for it to serve as a beautiful space that brings the community together,” Nardi said, underscoring the role of the new mini-park in enhancing life for Miami-Dade residents through the Parks and Open Space Master Plan. This initiative seeks to inspire a healthier, more connected community via a network of parks and open spaces. Area 227's transformation showcases the plan's wider goals of creating greener, more engaging environments for locals to enjoy life outdoors.
