As the deadline looms for Cook County property owners, a beacon of assistance emerges in the form of a new online tool designed to ease the burden of sizeable tax payments. Set to be available this Friday, the Cook County Treasurer's office, headed by Treasurer Maria Pappas, has announced a new payment plan calculator. According to a report by CBS News Chicago, this tool will enable property owners who owe $100 or more in late taxes to devise a payment strategy tailored to their financial situation.

The website, cookcountytreasurer.com, will offer the option to configure either a bi-weekly or monthly payment plan. Property owners are then able to log on and set up this plan without the necessity to settle their dues by the forthcoming August 1 deadline. Additionally, taxpayers are able to sign up for email or text notifications to remind them of the payment schedule recommended by the Payment Plan Calculator. "We want to do everything possible to help people pay off their tax debt," Treasurer Pappas told CBS News Chicago, highlighting the plight of individuals who stand to lose properties for amounts less than $1,000 in taxes.

The urgency of this tool is underscored by the recent assessments in the south and southwest suburbs of Cook County. Many homeowners are now facing property tax bills that have doubled compared to previous installments. While the Treasurer's office has previously accommodated partial payments, Pappas affirmed to WGN-TV that the new calculator provides a much-needed structured system for managing these higher bills.

Although property taxes that remain unpaid by the due date will still incur interest, the rate is 0.75% per month for 2023 taxes due in 2024, a reduction from the prior rate of 1.5% for earlier years. Despite the relief, the shadow of the Annual Tax Sale looms, a process where unpaid taxes are auctioned off roughly 13 months following the Second Installment due date. Here, according to Pappas as per WGN-TV, is where leniency is sparse, "The Annual Tax Sale knows no mercy," and the new tool becomes integral. The launch is particularly crucial for at-risk populations, such as seniors, who may find the tumult of unpaid taxes a direct threat to their home security.

Amidst this financial maelstrom, Treasury officials are not alone in their efforts. Community advocates, such as Rev. John Harrell, president of Black Men United, have pledged to disseminate knowledge of the payment plan calculator, an action vital to those who are uninformed or disconnected from such aid. "I will work with ministers to help get the word out," Reverend Harrell stated, as reported by CBS News.
